Texans know how cold it can get in the winter here, but a few years ago folks were grilling in shorts on Christmas Day. So, it makes sense that multiple towns cracked a top five ranking of the best places to visit in the winter.

Three Texas towns made the top 5 "Best Winter Vacation Destinations for Warm-Weather Lovers," according to Wallethub.

The Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown area scored the highest-ranked Texas spot, coming in at No. 3, and was the second-best ranked in the category for travel costs and hassles. Just behind the Austin area is the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex ranking No. 4, and the San Antonio-New Braunfels region collected the fifth spot, according to the study.

To establish its rankings, Wallethub compared 69 of the most populated metropolitan statistical areas based on travel costs and hassles, local costs, attractions, weather, warm-weather activities, and safety and rated them on a scale of 100. It also factored in the temperature over the past 50 years, the cheapest flights, the cost of hotels, and crime rates, according to the study.

Those three regions weren't the only Texas towns to make the list, Houston-Woodlands-Sugar Land came in at No. 8, Killeen-Temple ranked No. 24, Brownsville-Harlingen made the list at 28, and McAllen-Edinburg-Mission made the top 30. The Beaumont-Port Arthur area trailed at 31. Corpus Christi was the final Texas town on the list at No. 36.

The Las Vegas area took the top spot in the study and San Diego earned the No. 2 spot for folks to visit during the winter.
