I’ve visited the small historic town of Gruene, Texas, for the past 30 years, and every trip feels both nostalgic and buzzy with fresh new energy.
Some weekends are meant for floating down the Guadalupe River or shopping with friends, while others are for date nights, live music, or introducing my kids to my favorite only-in-Gruene traditions. Watching couples dancing at Gruene Hall, lining up to snag a table at the Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar, and enjoying ice cream in front of the historic water tower—this tiny enclave feels so Texan without trying too hard.

Although it’s now technically a part of the greater New Braunfels area, Gruene was founded as an independent town in the early 1840s by German immigrants who soon established a cotton gin powered by the Guadalupe River—this would later become the Gristmill Restaurant. However, the town’s prosperity ended during the Great Depression, when the cotton industry collapsed, and Gruene soon became a ghost town. Today, however, Gruene is now considered a Historic Town by the State of Texas, and is a U.S. Historic District, too. Visitors are drawn to the area by its German Texas heritage and its 25 walkable acres packed with cute shops, bustling restaurants, and live music. Its most famous building is arguably Gruene Hall, the legendary honky tonk where country music stars from George Strait to Townes Van Zandt to
"Gruene is a living piece of Texas history, but it doesn't feel stuck in the past. It’s rare to find a place where 1870s brickwork and that iconic water tower aren’t just preserved for photos, but are part of the town’s energy," says Julia Dedo van Maanen, director of marketing for French Cowboys Hospitality. "What I find most impressive is that in spite of its popularity, the district remains authentic and full of charm. It never slips into that ‘theme park’ kitsch you can find in some historic towns. Because of that genuine soul, it attracts a truly multi-generational crowd."
Here's what you need to know before planning a trip to Gruene, Texas.
Besides its beautiful location in the Texas Hill Country, one of the area's biggest attractions is Gruene Hall. Built in 1878, the 6,000-square-foot venue is the oldest operating dance hall in Texas, hosts live music daily, and has welcomed a heavy-hitting roster of Texan music legends. Weekday shows typically run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., while weekends usually kick off before noon, welcoming visitors to the dance floor early. And in a well-thought-out update that preserves its historic charm, Gruene Hall is adding air conditioning after more than 150 years of relying on open windows and oversized fans, making those long Texas summer sets much more enjoyable.

After dancing the afternoon away, cooling down with retail therapy is always a great idea. The streets of the historic district are lined with shops selling everything from art and antiques to contemporary clothing. Must-visit shops include Gruene General Store for locally made products and souvenirs, Cotton Eyed Joe's for official Gruene Hall merchandise, and Gruene Outfitters for outdoor wear and fly-fishing gear. One of the best times to visit is during Old Gruene Market Days, held on the third weekend of each month and featuring nearly 100 vendors offering artisan-made crafts, home decor, gourmet food, and jewelry.
"The district isn't large, but there's a lot to do—mercantiles, clothing boutiques, mini-golf, great coffee, and ice cream shops. For me, it’s a place made to be explored on a stroll," said Dedo van Maanen.
Set along the turquoise-blue Guadalupe River, it is no coincidence that Gruene is part of the so-called “Hill Country Coast.” This stretch of water, also referred to as "The Guad" by locals, is popular for canoeing, kayaking, and classic Texas tubing. Rockin' R River Rides, a family-owned outfitter, provides all the essentials for a day on the water, including a shuttle to and from popular tubing spots. For some, drifting along on a tube is the ultimate way to soak up the scenery, especially when water temperatures rarely exceed 75 degrees. For others, fly fishing is the ideal way to spend the day, and patient anglers are rewarded with rainbow trout, Guadalupe bass, largemouth bass, and spotted bass.
A visit to Gruene isn't complete without a meal at the Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar, a riverfront institution set inside the remains of an old cotton gin. For nearly 50 years, the indoor-outdoor eatery has served up American-style food with plates piled high with everything from chicken-fried steak and fried catfish to barbecue-slathered ribs. In my family, we always leave room for the strawberry shortcake and Jack Daniel's pecan pie. "To catch the best views of the Hill Country, try to snag a seat on that multi-level deck right as the sun begins to set," said Dedo van Maanen.
Known for pouring the "best margaritas" for over a decade, Cantina Del Rio is the go-to for delicious Tex-Mex. Menu highlights include enchiladas, tacos, and the cult-favorite El Rey Burger. Across the street from Gruene Hall, Mozie's is a happy-hour favorite with specialties like Shiner Bock-battered onion rings and The Big Dog, a quarter-pound all-beef hot dog that tastes great with a longneck beer or a Gruene gimlet.

Early risers aren't left out of Gruene's food scene. The Pantry, a charming outpost tucked inside Gruene Mansion Inn, serves traditional breakfast options, housemade pastries, and coffee drinks. For a more modern caffeine fix, Gruene Coffee Haus has a full espresso menu, house-roasted blends, smoothies, and locally made snacks.
If you are looking for a place to stay within a 10-minute walk of everything in Gruene, there are a handful of inviting escapes that put you in the center of it all. With stately wraparound porches, rocking chairs, and views of the Guadalupe River, Gruene Mansion Inn is the only hotel located in the historic district. Located next door to Gruene Hall, the inn has a variety of thoughtfully themed rooms from cozy accommodations for two to a private lodge that sleeps up to six.

Just steps away from the action, Gruene River Hotel & Retreat is a charming family-run bed and breakfast. Start your mornings with chef-prepared breakfasts and wind down with complimentary wine or beer, best enjoyed from private balconies overlooking the river. For families or larger groups, Gruene Cottages is nestled on three acres and has an onsite playground and pool, along with rooms with private balconies that can sleep up to eight guests.
